I took these photos on Thanksgiving weekend 2008 in and around the 29 Palms entrance to Joshua Tree National Park. The city was named after the original cluster of palms at this old oasis, said to number 29.

Donna and Larry Charpied fight to protect Joshua Tree National Park

Desert writer Deanne Stillman wrote a recent piece for Plenty magazine about Donna and Larry Charpied, who for the last twenty years have fought against the creation of a huge garbage dump at the edge of Joshua Tree National Park. Any day now the 9th Circuit Court in California is ruling about whether or not the dump will go forward. We pray that the court rules against it.
